26th December, 2009. 8:39 pm. Steampunk clothing ideas book

Have a new book that arrived today... Women in Pants: Manly Maidens, Cowgirls, and Other Renegades by Catherine Smith & Cynthia Greig (I bought it cheap on eBay, but amazon prices from other dealers are similar).

Victorian era ladies wearing bifurcated garments, all from images of the time period. Talking from harem pants, to bloomers, to stovepipe pants, and even full military uniform. Also discusses the different types of women who wore them and why, which range from coal miners to Eskimos to theater gals cross-dressed in full men's suits, pocket watch and cigars.

I am getting some great ideas for steampunk appropriate garments, as these ladies are not walking "fashion plates". In fact, one lady is dressed for a shoot, as she went out and hunted down critters herself for taxidermal museum settings in Colorado.

So, if you are interested in actual historic women wearing non-fashion plate garments, buy this book while you can. It seems to be on remainder now.

Current mood: pleased.

25th December, 2009. 10:42 pm. Christmas 2009

Ah, finally some quiet time as the kids are in bed. i'm enjoying the last of our mulled apple cider. We did get the public rooms of the house pretty well cleaned up, at least enough for company to come over. There is still much to be done, but this was a good start, and a massive effort on our part. Now to keep what we've done up to par, and clean, purge & organize the rest to match. Both our trash and recycle bins are full to the brim, which is unusual for us (usually it is the recycle bin that is full, with only one bag of trash). Thankfully, trash pickup is tomorrow.

the haul and our holiday behind the cut... )

I hope everyone here had a wonderful holiday celebration this year, be it Christmas, Hanukah, Yule or whatever your belief. Happy Holidays to all my friends here. Thank you so very much for reading, and know that I really appreciate your online presence, more than some may realize. While 12th Night is the next big thing for many, I am still unsure if I want to travel far to go to one, and New Years is usually a quiet night around here.

Current mood: happy.
Current music: Star to Follow - Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

21st December, 2009. 12:13 am. Taming some chaos

This week is going to be a massive cleanup for the Small family Christmas gathering, which will be at our home. First time in about 5 years. I've done some work last week (not enough), Rob finished the painting of the play room, and this weekend Rob and I have been slowly going through the living room and play room. We rearranged the furniture to get a better flow through the living room, which will also make it easier for his Mom to move around with her walker. I've cleared up the pile of toys in front of the fireplace to allow Santa room to enter. The pile of accumulated homework boxes have been sorted, old papers tossed into the blue bin, art pieces & important papers saved to be dealt with later. We still have a lot of toy sorting to go through, mostly tomorrow, and lots more cleaning to be done and more re-arranging of things, but it is nice having more room for the kids to play in, Wii in, maybe even Dancin' to the Oldies in.

I also have the kitchen to tackle, which is going to be a huge job. At least the fridge itself is done inside already (whew!). It's just tackling the counters of all the stuff piled up everywhere, and of course the floors. After the holidays, I think I do need to do some purging of the drawers & cupboards of things, but not now. I also want to bake some treats for the party.

So, busy week it seems. I am sure it will be busy for many of us.

Current mood: tired.

19th December, 2009. 2:16 am. The Worst Jobs in History

It was mentioned on the GBACG mailing list about some interesting videos, called "The Worst Jobs in History" with Tony Robinson who was an actor on Black Adder.

The series covers a variety of time periods, and ranges from the Middle Ages to the modern eras. Each episode comes in several parts I guess to get them uploaded. What is nifty is that Tony talks to various people who are experts, some re-enactors of the various jobs, from barber surgeon to the textile expert, many in their period clothing.

Here's a sample of what I've watched so far.
Middle Ages (pt 2): Wise woman

Middle Ages (pt 5): Fulling wool in stale urine

Tudor Times:
Executioner & spitboy/turnbroch

Groom of the stool & gong farmer/scourer (ewww)

boy actors (Shakespeare's Globe)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67wWc11UEMI&feature=related

Pin Maker (with discussion of pins by Jenny Tiramani) & woad dyers
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xznkMDBG1S8&feature=related

woad dying into a fishwife, and how the fishwife is punished.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67wWc11UEMI&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFL9yNo8VJA&feature=related

There are other time periods, too... but that is as far as I got tonight. Definitely worth watching, but some you might need a strong stomach to not end up squirming.

Current mood: sick.

15th December, 2009. 1:14 am. Steampunk thoughts

Looking around at steampunk things online, patterns, fashions, corsets, spats, whatever... just trying to get a feel of the genre, and seeing what's going on locally. And I am realizing that the local scene things seem to be more on the vampire/goth style (not all the pics, just a few). Well, I kind of outgrew vampire when we left the Camarilla larp some years ago, and have no interest getting back into wearing fangs and being fangsty.

The other thing I am realizing is that the men are usually dressed spats to top hat in full Victorian/Edwardian garments (from aristocrat to laborers in style), while the ladies are running around in just their undies (scandalous!), showing as much arms, chest, and legs as they can get away with. I only found one good image of a simple librarian type, wearing the seemingly obligatory goggles of course. I don't want to wear goggles, but wouldn't mind the brass eyepieces that jewelers use.

So... while I am looking forward to making Victorian/Edwardian things, and am looking to make some items just to wear every day, and to wear to next year's Dicken's Faire I hope. But steampunk may not be a good fit for me, unless I get away from the local scene and attend events in larger metro areas. Unless the local gaslamp group ends up less vampy, and more ... I don't know what, to be honest. Maybe I'm just getting too old to start a new dress up thing. Or maybe I just need to do Civil War, Dickens, and that sort of thing.

Yeah, I'm feeling a little old. So I am going to end this post and head off to get some rest.
